We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Nook Lane Junior School in Sheffield, for their generosity and kindness. A lovely pupil recently did a talk about Free Cakes for Kids at her school, and then organised a collection of ingredients for our volunteers!

With the help of her mum and the school, she organised a collection at Nook Lane Juniors for ingredients for us.

She has done such a fantastic job, and the school have been very generous.

Hello! I’m Jaq.

I’ve been baking cakes for Free Cakes for Kids Sheffield since 2014. I had some time between jobs and it was an ideal time to volunteer. I’ve loved baking the cakes - especially when I’ve tried hard to get the theme right, from make up and jewellery boxes to footballs and Peppa Pig!

My mum was a cook and a baker so I grew up baking all sorts of biscuits and cakes. I even made a blue cat cake and cat buns for my Home Economics O’Level exam! I also used to get requests to bake biscuits every time we had a girls get together in...

In 2017, our wonderful volunteers made 126 birthday cakes for children in the city. Our busiest month was March, where we made 15 cakes!

The Sheffield Food Festival team kindly gave us the opportunity to be involved in the celebrations over the May Bank Holiday weekend. We held a children’s baking workshop in the Theatre Kitchen Marquee, had a very popular stall in the Peace Gardens and hosted a cake and merchandise stall in the Winter Gardens.  Many thanks to everyone who donated - our activities raised £220.

Finally, we'd like to than...

Volunteer Felicia Ziparo has lived in Sheffield for nearly two years. In addition to baking birthday cakes, Felicia also volunteers as a Cake Fairy - our behind the scenes volunteers who organise the cake requests, deliveries and other important things that ensure the cakes keep coming.

Tell us about the best cake you've ever made.

"Once I made a birthday cake for a friend who loves penguins and skiing. I decorated the cake with a few penguins skiing on a mountain in different positions - I was very pleased with the final result and...

January can feel like a long (and cold!) month, with the expense of Christmas and dark nights drawing in. To many of us, it can feel like a long time until pay day.

So, if you're a professional working with children and families in Sheffield, please do think of cakes for kids if you're supporting a child celebrating a birthday this month.

Our volunteers are ready to bake a difference and ensure no child in the city misses out on a special birthday celebration.

Jane, a 40-something from Doncaster has been baking for Free Cakes for Kids Sheffield since 2013. We spoke to Jane to find out more about what motivates her to bake cakes for children in Sheffield.

"I trained as a baker and cake decorator after leaving school and when I had my children they were lucky and always got a cake on their birthdays.

I now work for shelter as a DIY Advisor. Some of the families I work with have had birthday cakes made by Free Cakes Sheffield and this little bit of something special for them can be the only nice thin...
