At Free Cakes for Kids Sheffield, we don't just make birthday cakes.

We also work closely with charities and organisations across the city to provide baking workshops so children can get hands on experience of baking and decorating cakes. From making gingerbread houses, baking and decorating cupcakes to learning to make bread, these workshops are another way we can work together with children and families in our community.

In 2014, we were lucky enough to win a grant of £500 from Skipton Building Society and their Grassroots Giving scheme. This grant was awarded for us to use solely on our baking workshops.

So far, we've held baking workshops at Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice, Shelter in Sheffield, children's centres and other organisations who work with children and families.

Many children in Sheffield have never baked with their families before, so not only are these workshops a chance for some family bonding, but both the children and parents can learn new skills which they can use at home.

Children also go home with a baking kit which includes a mixing bowl, wooden spoon, measuring cups, bun tray and cases – and a recipe!
